How to become a unicorn.
The project that I propose is a workshop about how to become a unicorn. In this workshop I use the unicorn as a metaphor of how capitalism is restricting our imagination. The unicorn used to be a symbol for scarcity, it was a unique and mysterious animal that was hard to catch. In the medieval times people believed that the unicorn could bring peace, love and happiness. Today it became a mass product. You can by a unicorn almost on every corner of the street. It almost becomes an illusion created by consumerism. I don’t think that this unicorn is doing something bad to us. I only see that the outcome that it could have has been restricted. And the historical creature has disappeared. In which the unicorn is able to get us in connection. In essence we are all part of a big system that is being connect with each other. We all deliver are part and if one parts falls away we get disconnected. Our connection find itself through desire. A desire that in these days is restricted. The unicorn is the one the can reshape our desire. Where desire becomes our connection again. Where the unicorn can function as a shelter, a garden in which we feel free and connected.
As love can be a political act, becoming a unicorn can be as well. By becoming a unicorn you open up towards a new connection with all beings. Human and non-human people. Where hierarchical systems disappear. Love becomes the new capital. At the same time you learn to patent yourself again, so you stay your own, and take back your rights.
A tension through combinations will appear. Where I will play with the in between of fiction and reality, intimacy and discomfort, irony and politics. Through the workshop I want to plant a seed that maybe turns out into a flower or a unicorn or that is becoming an unknow creature.
I plan to create two different version of the workshop. One is an online version. Where you can subscribe to and watch the videos that will be made online. The other one will be within a space where maybe other people are at the same time but you will find yourself within a box. You do this workshop all by yourself at different places. To move away from a singular way of thinking towards a more multidimensional way of thinking, where the human is not at the center anymore. Where all are equal. I want to play with a tension between this idea of being equal and the idea of a system that only exists for you. A different version of capitalism, where the capital has changed.
